Location Of Cardiff Airport

Cardiff Airport is located in the village of Rhoose, only 11.7 miles away from Cardiff city centre! It's easy to get there by car with a journey time of less than half an hour on the A48, A4232 and A4050. There are also buses that run every 15-20 minutes from County Hall which take around 35-40 minutes. If you prefer to take the train, there's no station at the airport but Rhoose Cardiff Airport Railway Station is connected to Cardiff Central and Bridgend, with a shuttle bus running from the station to the airport in only seven minutes. National Express coaches also run from CWL to different locations across the UK.

History Of Cardiff Airport

Cardiff Airport has a long and rich history - it was originally requisitioned by the Air Ministry during World War II to act as a training base and aerodrome for RAF Spitfire pilots. In 1951, Minister of Aviation David Rees-Williams saw potential for a commercial airport in the region and Aer Lingus began offering flights soon after. By 1962, passenger numbers had broken the 100,000 barrier. The Ministry of Defence transferred ownership and control of the airport to Glamorgan County Council in 1965 and its first transatlantic flight took off for Orlando, Florida in 1971. In the 1970s and 1980s further improvements followed with expansions of the terminal and runway which allowed larger aircraft to land. By 1992, close to 750,000 passengers used CWL and two years later it served one million passengers for the first time. In 1995, the Airport Company was privatised but then went back into public hands in 2012 after the Welsh government purchased it for £52 million. Today Cardiff Airport continues to grow and develop - providing convenient connections for people in the region.

Cardiff Airport Facilities

At this small airport, you won't find the same range of facilities as other airports in the UK. But don't worry! You can still find some of your favourite high-street shops like newsagents, brands and fast food spots in the main building. Visit A Cathedral With A Mix Of Olde And New

Llandaff Cathedral is one of the oldest cathedrals in the UK, dating all the way back to 1107. A lot of work was done on it up until the 19th century, but unfortunately a lot of that was destroyed by bombing during WWII. The diocese got modernist architect George Pace to help with the restoration though, and now the cathedral has some really interesting modern touches. There's even an aluminium Christ statue! It sounds a bit strange when you think about it, but it actually looks really great in its medieval surroundings. If you're interested, they offer guided tours for school and large groups so you can explore it all in person.

See What Wealth Allowed A “vivid Victorian Imagination”

Castell Coch, or 'Red Castle' in English, is an incredibly lavish castle built during the 19th century on ancient grounds. It was designed by the eccentric William Burges and was famously owned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute - a man to whom money was no object. Unfortunately, Burges didn't live to see his masterpiece completed, as the work finished 10 years after his death in 1891. Visitors can view the detailed drawings of his vision at the castle. Additionally, there are also multi-sensory resources that allow people to explore every inch of this incredible site - especially useful for those with physical or sensory impairments. Castell Coch is truly a sight to behold!
