Newcastle Airport has a rich history, dating all the way back to 1935 when the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Aero Club opened a facility consisting of a grass runway, wooden clubhouse, hangar and garage. It cost £35,000. In those early days they had flights to places like London and Scotland. Then in 1937 Allied Airways started a service between Newcastle and Stavanger in Norway. During World War II, the RAF used it as a base and built an air traffic control tower. After the war, new routes to London, Dublin, Amsterdam and Dusseldorf opened up as well as package holiday flights to the Isle of Man and Wight. In 1967 a new terminal building was opened by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. The airport gained Category B status from the government in 1978 and welcomed its one millionth passenger in 1980. What's really impressive is that the same individual, Jim Denyer, was responsible for managing the facility for 37 years - beginning in 1952 until his retirement in 1989.
