Salt Lake City International Airport has been providing air travel to the public since 1911. It all started when an airfield was established at Basque Flats with just a landing strip. The Great International Aviation Carnival brought seaplanes and the Wright Brothers to the general public, but mainly used for training flights and air mail services. In 1925, Western Air Express took passenger flights to a whole new level by offering tickets on the same route they were transporting air mail. Through late 1920s, expansion projects included runway construction and a terminal build, eventually changing its name to Salt Lake City Municipal Airport. It wasn't until the 1960s that jets arrived and international destinations like Canada could be reached. This led to the modern name we know today, Salt Lake City International. The deregulation of airlines in the 70s and 80s helped Western Airlines make SLC Airport their hub, with a second terminal built in response. Continuous development since then has included new concourses, parking lots, access roads and hangars. This has kept the airport a top-rated one in the US for scheduling and on-time flights. With passenger numbers beyond 20 million in a year, there are plans to further expand and add a new terminal, keeping SLC Airport as one of the most efficient airports in the USA.
