Location Of Southwest Florida Airport
If you're looking for the easiest way to get to RSW Airport from Fort Myers, you'll want to hop on I-75. The airport is located 15.9 miles (25.6 kilometers) southeast of downtown, so it's a pretty quick drive! Unfortunately, there are no trains or direct bus routes that go straight there. However, you can catch a connecting bus in Villas and some area hotels also provide complimentary shuttle services to the airport. Private third-party shuttles are also available if needed.
History Of Southwest Florida Airport
RSW is still a relatively young airport, having only opened in 1983. Despite its small size, it quickly became an international hub for travel and changed its name to Southwest Florida International Airport in 1993. With demand increasing, the airport underwent an expansion in the late 1990s that added three extra gates but proved to be insufficient - by 2004 close to seven million passengers had passed through the airport. In response, a new state-of-the-art terminal was opened in 2005 at a cost of nearly $440 million. Nowadays RSW boasts three concourses and 28 gates but there's enough space in the current terminal for two more concourses and 37 extra gates!
