Location Of Bristol Airport
Heading to Bristol Airport but wondering how to get there? Well, it's not actually in the city of Bristol itself – it's located 8.1 miles away in Lulsgate Bottom, North Somerset. The easiest way is by car from anywhere in the South West once you get on to the A4 road. Just be aware that the area around the airport is known for traffic congestion! For those without a vehicle, there's 24-hour bus services from Bristol Temple Meads Station and Bristol Bus and Coach Station in the city centre. Plus, coach services link the airport with Plymouth, Exeter, Taunton, Cardiff and other South Wales towns during the week and weekend. So you've got plenty of options!
History Of Bristol Airport
Bristol Airport (BRS) first opened its doors to the public back in 1930, making it one of only three civil airports in the UK at the time. In 1939 alone, 4,000 passengers had already passed through! During World War II, the Air Ministry took control of BRS, though it still served as a flight base for Winston Churchill and other VIPs. The airport moved to a new home on the former site of Lulsgate Bottom Airfield in 1955, with the official opening for public use overseen by The Duchess of Kent two years later. In its first year, 33,000 passengers and 598,000 imperial tonnes (607,600 metric tonnes) of cargo had already been served. Bristol Airport has seen many improvements over the years and by 1993, one million passengers had passed through the terminal. In 2000, a new larger terminal was opened and the old building closed to make way for ongoing modernisation. That same year also saw the return of transatlantic flights with a flight destined for Toronto, Canada. It's expected that the airport will continue to grow and develop; operators are hoping for 12 million passengers by 2030!
