CHC is located in the suburb of Harewood, just a short 12 km (seven miles) north west from Christchurch city centre. To get to the airport you can take either Memorial Avenue - which leads directly into central Christchurch - or State Highway 1, which runs the length of both islands and serves as New Zealand’s main road network. It's only a 20 minute taxi ride from downtown Christchurch, and there are buses running every half an hour that can get you there in between 30-60 minutes - depending on where you board. Unfortunately the airport doesn't have dedicated rail facilities, but Addington Railway Station is just 10 km (six miles) away, so a short taxi ride and you'll be at check-in.

Christchurch Airport (CHC) has come a long way since it opened its doors in 1937. The local council chose Harewood as the best location for an aerodrome and, two years later, the 561-acre site had a 3,000-feet runway and a small terminal building. Then, in 1940, it became RNZAF Station Harewood. As more international air traffic and visitors arrived in the 1950s, a larger terminal was designed by New Zealand architect Paul Pascoe.
