$?Guide To Christchurch Airport
Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is the main airport serving New Zealand's South Island. It's got one terminal and two perpendicular runways – making it a busy hub for both domestic and international flights, with over 1,000 journeys to more than 30 destinations each week! CHC was the first international airport to open in New Zealand and it's the second busiest in the country – with over 6 million passengers passing through each year. It's also one of only two major airports capable of accommodating long-haul flights, such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, making it a crucial gateway for Christchurch and the South Island. Pretty impressive stuff!

Location Of Christchurch Airport
CHC is located in the suburb of Harewood, just a short 12 km (seven miles) north west from Christchurch city centre. To get to the airport you can take either Memorial Avenue - which leads directly into central Christchurch - or State Highway 1, which runs the length of both islands and serves as New Zealand’s main road network. It's only a 20 minute taxi ride from downtown Christchurch, and there are buses running every half an hour that can get you there in between 30-60 minutes - depending on where you board. Unfortunately the airport doesn't have dedicated rail facilities, but Addington Railway Station is just 10 km (six miles) away, so a short taxi ride and you'll be at check-in.
History Of Christchurch Airport
Christchurch Airport (CHC) has come a long way since it opened its doors in 1937. The local council chose Harewood as the best location for an aerodrome and, two years later, the 561-acre site had a 3,000-feet runway and a small terminal building. Then, in 1940, it became RNZAF Station Harewood. As more international air traffic and visitors arrived in the 1950s, a larger terminal was designed by New Zealand architect Paul Pascoe. His new building opened in 1960 and since then, CHC has been on an almost constant mission to improve its access routes, parking facilities and runways. The latest upgrade to the terminal has enabled CHC to welcome even more international visitors. It's fair to say that Christchurch Airport is now a world-class destination!
